Education, not medical advice
The content on this site is general patient education. It is not a diagnosis, not a treatment recommendation, and not a substitute for a consultation with a clinician who has examined you. Whether swelling is ordinary cannot be decided from a page: do not use this site to conclude that your swelling is harmless, and do not use it to conclude that it is something serious. When in doubt, make the call.
The findings that need immediate care
One leg or arm that is swollen, warm and tender, particularly after being still, requires emergency care immediately, because a clot in a limb can travel to the lung. Breathlessness or chest pain together with swelling in a limb requires emergency care immediately. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, requires emergency care immediately. Spreading redness, heat, fever or discharge, and a swelling that is tense, hard and painful or growing quickly, require care the same day. Both legs swollen with weight gain and breathlessness requires urgent care.
What treatment can and cannot change
Elevation, a correctly fitted compression garment, gentle movement and reduced salt improve comfort and can shorten recovery, and none of them resolves fluid that has collected or repairs lymph drainage that has been affected. Draining a collection removes the fluid that is there and does not prevent it re-forming. An operation can change a contour and remove skin once the swelling has resolved; it cannot restore tissue to what it was before the first procedure, and it begins a second recovery.
When to seek care
Contact your treating team first for anything that is not an emergency; if the team cannot be reached, call the hospital main line. For a swollen limb with warmth and tenderness, breathlessness or chest pain with limb swelling, swelling of the airway, or difficulty breathing, attend the nearest emergency department immediately. Do not massage a swollen limb, do not apply heat to it, and do not take a diuretic or an antibiotic that was not prescribed for this.
